Your site went live last week. You sent the link to your family, posted it on Instagram, and now, on the couch, you type your company name into Google. Your Instagram profile shows up, a directory shows up, even a competitor shows up. Your website does not, or it sits on page three.

The question is always the same: does Google not know the site exists, or does it know and just rank it low? Knowing how to check if your website shows up on Google is the first step, because the two situations call for different fixes.

Short answer: there are four free checks, from the simplest to the most complete. Search site:yourdomain.com on Google to see whether it knows your site. Search your company name and a phrase about your service to see how it appears. Use URL Inspection in Search Console to ask Google about one specific page. And open the Performance report to see which searches already found you.

Check 1: does Google know my site?

Open Google and type site: followed by your address, with no space and no https://. For example, site:mysite.com.

  • Pages from your site appear: Google has already stored them. It knows the site, and the problem, if there is one, is ranking.
  • Nothing appears: Google has not stored any page yet. The site may be too new, or there may be a technical block. Jump to check 3.

It is a quick yes or no. Do not treat the number of results as a measurement of anything: it is only an estimate. What matters is seeing your pages there.

Check 2: how my site appears when someone searches

Now search the way your customer would. Open an incognito window, so your history does not influence the results, and type three things:

  1. Your company name. Your site should come first. If it does not, that is a strong sign something is wrong.
  2. Your service plus your city, such as “nutritionist in Jacareí” or “labor lawyer in Taubaté”. This is the search that brings in the most customers.
  3. The question your customer asks, such as “how much does it cost” or “how to choose”, followed by your service.

Write down the position of each one. Do not panic: a new business rarely reaches page one for a competitive search. What you are measuring is your starting point.

Check 3: ask Google about a page (URL Inspection)

Search Console is a free Google tool where you confirm you own the site and then see how Google sees it. If whoever built your site did not connect it, ask them to.

Inside it, URL Inspection works like a direct question: paste the address of a page and Google tells you whether it is stored, or if it is not, why. If it is not, there is an option to request indexing. Google limits these requests per day, so use it for the pages that matter (the home page and the services), not all of them.

Also in Search Console, the Sitemaps report shows whether Google received the list of pages of your site. A site with no sitemap submitted usually takes longer to be discovered.

Check 4: which searches already found me (Performance)

This is the report that teaches the most. Performance shows, for a period, four numbers: impressions (how many times your site appeared in a search), clicks, average position and the exact searches that made your site appear.

Read it in the order below:

What you see What it usually means What to do
Zero impressions Google has not shown the site to anyone yet Run check 3 and wait a few weeks
Many impressions and almost no clicks The site appears, but the title does not convince Rewrite the page title and description
Position between 8 and 20 You are close to page one Strengthen the page with more examples and internal links
Appears only for the company name Nobody finds you without already knowing you Create pages for the service and the city

How it went on our own site

We do this reading on the studio’s own site, and it has already changed what we write. In the October 2026 Performance report, which covered 92 days, the site had 948 impressions. Among the searches, the word “tipografia” (typography) already showed up at position 6. That is what made us write the post on how to choose brand fonts: Google had already shown where the interest was, and all we had to do was answer.

On the publishing side, our site also notifies Google by itself. With every new post, the sitemap is resubmitted to Search Console in the same release. That is why every site that leaves the studio is born connected to Search Console and Analytics 4: without that connection, you only find out about problems when the phone stops ringing.

How long is normal to wait

A new site does not show up the same day. Google has to discover the address, visit the pages and decide where to place them, and according to Google itself that takes anywhere from days to weeks. A good position for a search with a city takes longer and depends on consistency: new pages, posts and a Google Business Profile kept up to date.

Be wary of anyone who promises first place in a few days. Nobody controls the position, only the quality of what is on the page.

A 20-minute monthly routine

After the first diagnosis, one visit a month to Search Console is enough:

  • Open Performance and filter by your site’s pages.
  • See what has moved into positions 8 to 20 and strengthen those pages.
  • Look for searches with many impressions and few clicks and rewrite the title.
  • Check in URL Inspection that every new page has been stored.

If your site is also slow, read how to tell if your website is slow, because speed weighs on the experience of whoever arrives.
